Meet Sheena!

Foster mom Joy has been fostering Sheena for ECHO since late June 2023. Joy has dedicated a tremendous amount of time, energy, love and emotion to help Sheena become a solid citizen.

Here is what Joy has to say:

Sheena – 2.5 years smooth coated border collie/herding mix breed. 26 pounds, Sheena is small in size but big in power, energy and personality. Sheena is as smart as she is beautiful. Sheena would do well as the only dog, or could live with another fun dog companion to play with (after appropriate introductions).

The good:

Sheena is housebroken, crate trained, rides well in the car, walks well on leash, sleeps quietly in her crate at night. She is affectionate and loyal and loves her person. Sheena craves a very close bond and wants to please.

Sheena loves toys and will play with a toy with you or on her own. She has learned to “drop it.”

Sheena takes a bit of time to get used to other dogs, but she loves to play with other dogs. She lives with 2 JRT/Chi mixes, a 6 month BC puppy and a 10 year old female BC. She prefers male dogs and she and her 6 months puppy brother have a great time racing, chasing, tugging and wrestling.

Sheena settles well in the house, despite her high energy level, and is a very good work from home companion. She settles next to my desk and will stay there all day if allowed.

Living on the farm is a very large barn cat. Sheena gets along well with George and they are friends. There are no cats in the house.

Sheena has graduated from a basic obedience class which she really enjoyed. She was concerned about the instructor, a tall male, but he very quickly won her over. She is super eager to do her obedience “tricks” and she literally shivers with anticipation.
Sheena loves agility and is fast, trainable and eager to learn. She is an amazing jumper and is very light on her feet. She would love to continue training. Here is a video link from over the winter and she has continued to progress.

The Not As Good:

Sheena is a friendly dog and loves everyone, but she needs time to warm up before she is comfortable with both people and dogs. She will alarm bark so you will never be surprised by her actions. She settles well given a few minutes and then is very friendly and enjoys taking treats and giving hugs. I have some very successful training exercises that will be shared with any adopter to help her continue to be relaxed and confident. She will take cues from a friendly, more confident dog.

Sheena is nervous at the vet but does fine if pre-medicated. She has been to the vet multiple times with her foster and while Sheena is fearful, she is able to control her emotions.
Sheena takes 1 fluoxetine (prozac) daily to help keep her calm. Cost is about 38 cents per day and this has greatly helped her to stay grounded. It’s possible she could be weaned off the medication over time, but I have found that it makes her much happier.

Sheena is a great dog with so much potential!

She will give you her full heart and will always try to do her best for you.
